JLP criticises cement company's monopoly status Dionne Rose Staff Reporter
published: Monday | March 6, 2006

OPPOSITION SPOKESPERSON on Industry, Senator Shirley Williams wants the government to urgently reverse the monopoly status of Caribbean Cement Company Limited (CCCL).

Senator Williams raised the matter while making her contribution to the State of the Nation Debate in the Senate on Friday.

CRISIS IN INDUSTRY

According to her, there was a crisis facing the sector and the government must address it.

On February 24, CCCL had to recall approximately 500 tonnes of cement, found to exhibit "false setting characteristics" or premature hardening of concrete.

Senator Williams has also criticised the manner in which the company dealt with the occurrence, noting that it should have issued a public statement that bags of cement with a particular number should not be used.

RECALLING BATCH

The opposition Senator was also wary of claims that CCCL had recalled the entire faulty batch.

"That is not possible in my mind, because distributors would have already sold it out in the country parts," she said.

Meanwhile, two concrete experts are expected to arrive in the island today to assist CCCL with an investigation into the circumstances relating to the release of the batch of faulty cement.
