THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WOULD like to commend your choice for the Letter of the Day, 'The church courting danger' on February 22, written by Charles Evans.
That letter should be dis-tributed to all churches and mandated as required reading for members of the churches' administrations.
Mr. Evans' letter is reasoned, balanced, instructive, brilliant and wise. It would seem that the Church has always rallied to any cause that may have some kind of sexual under or overtone.
The cartoon by Las May of even date captures the verve of the majority of the churches on matters that affect society.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Your editorial on page A8 - 'More charter heat than light' - should provide the churches' leaders with some amount of food for thought and quiet reflection.
Finally, if I may quote from the excellent Letter of the Day": "I challenge you that rather than trying to legislate how people should behave, why not try to positively influence their behaviour and let them make their own choice?"
But maybe the Church may find this exhortation to be somewhat difficult, for who would they be able to 'read out' or send to the 'back benches'?
However, having said all of the above, credit must be given to the Church in their mastery of the art of timing.
LET VOICE BE HEARD
The Church knows that the People's National Party (PNP) administration is in an election mode and with their almost one million strong membership, they waited for 15 years to voice their protest to the charter, knowing fully well that the hapless Senator and Minister of Justice would have to back-pedal on a previous position of not being prepared to wait one day more to pass the charter, and instead be inclined to wait, even for 40 years in order to let the voice of the Church be heard.
Interesting, when one con-siders the response of the PNP administration to a request for a referendum on the Caribbean Court of Justice.
I am, etc.,
