WESTERN BUREAU:
STRUGGLERS RENO FC and Constant Spring both failed miserably in their quest to improve their standings in the 2005-06 Wray and Nephew National Premier League football competition yesterday afternoon when they played out a 0-0 finish in a game characterised by a spate of missed chances at the Frome Sports Ground in Westmoreland.
By virtue of the result, Reno remain in 10th place although moving up to 27 points, while Constant Spring, which moved up to 22 points, remain in 11th place in the 12-team standings.
"We let ourselves down today by being very indisciplined in terms of the game plan we took into the game," said Eaton Bruce, the coach of the Reno team. "Nonetheless, we still got enough good chances to have won the game."
Despite their failure to win, Constant Spring's coach Danny Lyn was not overly disappointed as he said his first priority was not to lose.
"We came here with the intention of not losing and we attained that objective so we can't quarrel," said Lyn. "However, it was not the type of game I was expecting as both teams played as if they did not want to win and did not want to lose."
In the first half, the Reno team started out positively and should have taken the lead in the fifth minute when Ricardo Scott pounced on a cross from Martin Williams but booted over the crossbar.
Five minutes later Constant Spring also created a chance when Jermaine Richards fired straight at goalkeeper Aaron Lawrence from close range.
Midway the half, Reno missed two further chances in the 32nd and 35th minutes. Firstly, Nicholi Findlayson fired wide after being sent clear by Fabian Blake and secondly, when Scott lobbed the ball wide with the goalkeeper at his mercy.
On the stroke of half-time, Constant Spring missed the easiest of chances when Richards beat the Reno offside trap but fired wide of both the advancing goalkeeper and the goal.
The second half lacked the energy of the first as both teams appeared much more defensive in their approach, attacking only in spurts. However, both did create a few scoring opportunities.
Midway the half Reno squandered a golden opportunity when Gary McIntosh scooped the ball wide with only the goalkeeper to contend with.
In the dying moments Constant Spring missed a clear chance to grab all three points. Shawn Hunter caught the Reno defence stranded on a counter-attack but his close-range header was directed wide of the goal.
