Manchester blown away

BROWN

MANDEVILLE, Manchester:

LEGSPINNER ODEAN Brown, who had surprisingly featured in only one game for Jamaica in the just concluded regional domestic season, took his second consecutive five wicket haul as St. Catherine CC inflicted an eight-wicket defeat on defending champions Manchester yesterday.

The Tamar Lambert led team drove home the 59-run first innings advantage gained from Saturday as Manchester capitulated for just 108 in their second innings. Their scorecard was a sorry repeat of their first innings batting debacle, where opener Gary Graham was the only batsman to reach double figures.

He was the penultimate batsman to be dismissed, and he showed much the attitude and technique his colleagues appeared to have forgotten, spending some 170 minutes at the crease, facing 146 balls and getting the only half century of the match - 54.

Brown, a former Holmwood Headley Cup player had gotten six wickets against Kingston in last week's first innings, but this time he got the act right in the second to snare figures of five for 27 off 16 overs, including four maidens. St. Catherine then took just 11 overs to achieve the 49-run target painstakingly put up by the home side in 49 overs.

While St. Catherine lost the wicket of Dean Morgan and Danza Hyatt cheaply, in addition to the scare of Junior Stewart having to be rushed to the hospital for a suspected broken finger, after being hit by pacer Boris Hutchinson, victory was never in doubt as Keith Hibbert (12 not out) and Lambert (9 not out) calmly took them home.

The now have seven points heading into this weekend's third round away match-up against Lucas. Manchester will travel to Westmoreland having just one point from their first round high-scoring draw against Melbourne.
