THE OPPOSITION Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is calling for the resignation of Government Ministers Phillip Paulwell and Aloun N'Dombet Assamba who they are alleging tried to cover-up the faulty cement controversy that has rocked Caribbean Cement Company Ltd., (CCCL).
Opposition Senator Shirley Williams made the call for Mrs. Assamba, Minister of Industry and Tourism and Mr. Paulwell, Minister of Commerce, Science and Technology to demit office.
She claimed they knew that there was a problem of quality at the Cement Company but "let it lie low."
The Opposition is also demanding that an independent probe be launched into the circumstances surrounding the production of the faulty cement and how it was permitted to enter the market undetected.
PUBLIC AT RISK
Bruce Golding, Opposition Leader, emphasised that Mr. Paulwell could not rely on the cement company to certify the integrity of its own product. "We want an independent investigation into the causes and circumstances that led to bad cement being put on the market and bad cement putting members of the public in peril."
These sharp demands were put forward at a press conference staged by the top brass of the JLP at the party's Belmont Road headquarters.
Said Golding: "Our concern right now is the people of Jamaica, the consumers, whose investments have been compromised and whose lives may very well be in danger ... "
