THE EDITOR, Sir:TODAY'S 'LETTER of the Day' (March 17) is a reflection of the way I feel about the crime problem here, like so many of us trying to live and prosper our families in Jamaica. The writer of that letter does not live here, but yet is able to feel and know the situation, and know that it is horrible and getting worse.
EPIDEMIC OF CYNICISM
Another letter in which it is suggested that murderers be hanged in public and on TV well! If I were the parent of a murdered child, and the murderer was about to be hanged on TV, I would check my watch and put the popcorn in the microwave.epidemic.
I guess that this reaction is just a symptom of the epidemic of hard cynicism that is now prevalent throughout our entire society from top to bottom. That hardness which makes that person kill the child, is the same hardness that makes us want to watch this killer hang.
FEAR OF DEATH
Is it the fear of death that deters crime? In that case, hanging or execution would not work here. Our criminals, these young men with hardened hearts, a legacy of their upbringing and lack of love, do not fear death at all. Their heroes are simply older versions of themselves, and their dance is to a different drum indeed.
What has already been produced must be controlled by law, and what is in the production stage must be gathered and saved. Prevention is better than cure every time.
I am, etc.,
