THE EDITOR Sir:
WHO WILL have the courage to tell Mr. Norman DaCosta, vice- president of the National Workers Union, that he is making an ass of himself and endangering the future, not just of the bauxite industry, but the people of this country?
Can you believe that after the punishing negotiations to save the jobs of hundreds of workers at Windalco and with it, the contribution which the company makes to the national revenue, not even a week has passed before Mr. DaCosta has started up his buffoonery again, this time making non-negotiable demands that no delegate must be made redundant.
Windalco has responded to say that redundancy considerations were going on before the wage debacle. So what would Mr. DaCosta prefer - that the company close altogether rather than a few jobs be lost? Somebody should send him to read the history of Goodyear and St. Thomas and the price an entire parish paid for the arrogance of one man, Lambert Brown, who now wears suit and tie while St. Thomas people are still hunting for another Goodyear.
No wonder some people are against trade unions. I am not. What I am against is irresponsible behaviour by hypocritical straw bosses who can afford to let off wind about workers rights and get endless media coverage without giving one damn about the future of the workers and the rest of the country.
Grow up, Mr. DaCosta. By the way, why is his every inane utterance given headline attention? Maybe if we ignored him he would shut up and do his work responsibly.
I am, etc.,
