Wizards break Urban Knights' winning streak
published: Wednesday | March 22, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

THE DENHAM Town Wizards snapped the Urban Knights nine-game winning streak, 88-85, in KFC/bmobile National Basket-ball (NBL) league action at the National Stadium courts on Monday night.

The Wizards and Knights were the only unbeaten teams in the league until two games ago. The Wizards, who had their winning run snapped by defending champions St. George's Slayers last Tuesday, made sure that the same happened to the Urban Knights, leaving both teams with 9-1 records.

Spearheaded by Anthony Farquharson's 22 points, 16 rebounds and three steals, the Wizards came from behind to win after trailing 20-16 at the first break.

They got back on even terms midway through the second quarter and took a two-point lead into half-time at 42-40. However, in a game that saw the teams trade baskets and was close almost the whole way through, the Knights came back to hold a one-point lead headed into the final quarter, 60-59.

However, it was too much Denham Town in the end as, despite the best efforts of Paul Oliphant who had 26 points, and five assists, the Wizards would regain the lead and hold on for the win.

LAKERS GET BY JDF

In the night's other game, the Harbour View Laker's snapped a seven-game losing streak when they got the better of the Jamaica Defence Force 64-60.

Raymond Francis led the way for the JDF with 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Kevin Groves had 20 points for the Lakers.

He was assisted by big man Gary Reid's 12 points and 14 rebounds. The Lakers are now 2-8, while the JDF fell to a 3-8 record.
