PARAMARIBO, Suriname, (CMC):
BRAZIL LAW enforcement officials have arrived in Suriname to assist local detectives investigate cases allegedly involving Brazilian nationals, according to Justice and Police Minister Chandrikapersad Santokhi.
The Brazilian police officers will conduct investigations in the Brazilian communities in Suriname, especially in the gold mining regions, as the Portuguese language is considered a main obstacle for the Suriname police force to investigate in the Brazilian community.
Santohki told reporters that the officers would exchange criminal information with their Surinamese counterparts about Brazilian criminals who have fled to Suriname. They will also assist in the identification of suspects sought by the Surinamese authorities.
NO ARRESTS MADE
Santokhi said that so far no arrests have been made in the cases in which the Brazilian officers are involved.
Two Brazilian nationals, who allegedly shot and killed a Surinamese police officer in an ambush in September 2005, are still at large. Police sources say the killers are believed to be hiding in the interior where law enforcement is insufficient.
