PARLIAMENT'S JOINT Select Committee reviewing the Access to Information Act (ATI) wants the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) and Caribbean Cement Company Ltd., to fall under the ambit of the legislation.
The committee members made the recommendation yesterday during their final meeting after reviewing some of the issues raised by several organisations in relation to the legislation.
The recommendation was first made by the Carter Centre, which had pointed out that the Government had failed to pass an affirmative resolution to have private sector companies holding critical public information to be covered by the legislation.
But yesterday Senator Professor Trevor Munroe, Government committee member, insisted the Committee make that decision.
"I believe that ... our experience over the last two years or 18 months has demonstrated clearly that at least two entities need to be brought within the purview of this Act," Professor Munroe said.
"I strongly urge that we so say and, as a matter of urgency, people need to see what are the contractual arrangements within these entities, which are now not in our purview as citizens," he added.
