Bermudan soldiers arrested on return from Jamaica
published: Friday | March 24, 2006

HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC):

THREE BERMUDA Regiment soldiers have been arrested on suspicion of importing drugs after coming back from an annual training camp in Jamaica, police said yesterday.

Police media spokesman Dwayne Caines said the part-time soldiers - three privates - were arrested under the Misuse of Drugs Act at the Bermuda International Airport.

RELEASED ON BAIL

Caines said the youngest was 24, the other two were 26 and 29 respectively. He added the three privates were released on bail to appear in court later.

Materials seized will be sent to a government analyst. Regiment Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Eddie Lamb said the trio may face further punishment by the regiment if convicted in court.

"I do reserve the right to take further punitive measures as I see fit," he said.

Lamb said regiment soldiers received repeated drug warnings since they were searched twice in Jamaica, including with police dogs, and once on their return in Bermuda.
