THREE DOMINICAN Republic nationals who were among a group of 65 illegal aliens taken into custody by immigration authorities last week have been released.
The three men, who have established that they are married to Jamaican women, have been released with instructions to have their resident status regularised.
"They have been married to Jamaican women and they have families, they have children here. Since they are married, we do not want to deny the children of their breadwinner," immigration officer, Deputy Superintendent Hyacinth Wallace said.
However, the remaining 62 men, 59 of whom are Hondurans and three from the Dominican Republic, have had charges laid against them as they have failed to present documentation to suggest how they entered the island. The charges include overstaying their time and illegal landing.
Just last week, the men were taken off three fishing vessels said to be owned by a Clarendon businessman, during a police operation in the waters of Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine. They are being housed at Mobile Reserve headquarters at Up Park Camp and Horizon Remand Centre.
Ms. Wallace said the men will be held until the courts make a decision regarding their deportation.
