Dignitaries fly in for Portia's swearing-in
published: Wednesday | March 29, 2006

THE GUEST list for tomorrow's swearing-in ceremony for Jamaica's first female Prime Minister, Portia Simpson Miller, is impressive.

Regional leaders Owen Arthur of Barbados, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Patrick Manning of Trinidad and Tobago and Michael Missick, Chief Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands, round out the list of confirmed regional heads of government who are expected to attend the lavish ceremony at King's House, the Governor-General's official residence.

Other representatives from the Caribbean include Dr. Edwin Carrington, secretary general of the Caribbean Community and delegations from The Bahamas, Bermuda, and Antigua and Barbuda.

FARRAKHAN, US ARTISTES COMING

Also confirmed to attend are Nation of Islam head, Minister Louis Farrakhan, and 14 members of the United States Congress led by Congressman Charles Rangle.

From the American entertainment industry, unconfirmed reports are that R&B singers Roberta Flack and Freddie Jackson will be in attendance.

And, from the Phat Farm dynasty, Russell Simmons and wife Kimora Lee Simmons will also be in attendance.

Following the official ceremony at King's House, there will be a gala and ball at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston.

Yesterday, Mrs. Simpson Miller received a congratulatory phone call from United States President George W. Bush.
