Saints looking to quell Melbourne
published: Saturday | April 1, 2006

Samuels (left) and Lambert (right)

LEADERS ST. Catherine face a stern test this weekend when they host Melbourne in a sixth round Supreme Ventures Super Cup match at Chedwin Park.

Despite leading by six points, St. Catherine (25 points), will remember that Melbourne's Samuels scored a triple century on his last visit to the Park.

In his innings, just under two years ago, Samuels slammed 27 fours and eight sixes from 327 balls in 418 minutes.

Apart from Samuels, St. Catherine will have to contend with the league's top-scorer in Donovan Pagon, who hit two centuries and four half centuries for 536 runs.

Apart from those big two, Melbourne, fourth in the standings on 15 points, also have the services of Carlton Baugh Jr., and Damion Jacobs who has scored the league's only double century this season.

However, St. Catherine, with the league's leading wicket-takers in Bevon Brown (28) and Odean Brown (24), along with Jermaine Lawson, are equipped to handle the strong Melbourne batting line-up.

Though none of their batsmen are among the top five leading run-scorers this season, Tamar Lambert, Danza Hyatt and Keith Hibbert can't be taken lightly.

They, however, will have to contend with Melbourne's Nikita Miller, who took 5-36 the last time he played there, Jacobs, Samuels, and Leon Bent.

The day's other top game will pit second place Manchester (19 points) against sixth place St. Elizabeth (10) at Kirkvine.

Damion Ebanks who is the second top run-scorer this season with 428, which includes two centuries, Shawn Findlay, Howard Powell, and Ainsley Goss will lead St. Elizabeth's fight against Manchester with Donovan Sinclair, who scored two centuries in his 350-run tally, joint leading wicket-taker Andre Dwyer, and Orville and Gary Graham.
