White hot!
published: Monday | April 3, 2006

Tesi Johnson, Gleaner Writer

Achieve casual chic by pairing jeans with a classy white blouse.

COOL, CRISP whites look great all year round, but in spring and summer time, white looks even more radiant as it is exposed to the brilliance of the sun.

Easter is upon us, which means now is a great time to go shopping for clothing in the most wearable colour - white.

NOTE

If you're wearing an all-white outfit, top and bottom should be the same shade. A pearl white blouse with an off-white skirt is just tacky.

Also, wear a bra or camisole with your white blouses if the material isn't very dense or thick, unless you want to give a peep show. The most inconspicuous colour when worn under white is black, so stick to the black underwear, unless of course, you want them to show.

Tips on caring for whites

It goes without saying; do not wash your whites with other colours, so as to avoid contact with the dyes in coloured clothing.

Follow the care directions on the clothing. Some materials respond better to dry cleaning, or hand washing, warm or cold water, depending on the instructions.

Contrary to popular belief, using too much bleach can actually make your whites look yellow and dingy.

Whites tend to go yellow under the arms after several wash-and-wear cycles. To delay this, pay particular attention to the underarms when washing them. Rubbing the age-old 'Blue Bomber' soap under the arms usually does the trick.

Storing whites in the dark can cause yellowing, so be sure to sun-dry them where the care instructions permit.

(Next week: some hot white accessory ideas).

White with silver is always a safe bet. Grey is also a reliable match for white.
