MANDEVILLE, Manchester:
SOME $11 MILLION is being spent over the next 18 months by the South Coast Resort Board to restore and beautify roundabouts on the island's south coast.
The project, which is being carried out in association with the Tourism Product Development Company, will include the parishes of Clarendon, Manchester, St. Elizabeth and the border of Westmoreland.
Funding for the project will be derived from taxes collected from visitors to the island, by the Government, specifically for the beautification of the islands tourist destinations, according to cairman of the South Coast Resort Board, Anthony Freckleton.
He said work has already started on the May Pen to Lionel Town roundabout in Clarendon with Wlliamsfield and New Green in the parish slated next.
Once the roundabouts are restored, members of the private sector will be asked to adopt and maintain them.
Those who buy into the project will be allowed to erect 'tasteful signs' advertising their businesses.
Mr. Freckleton said many of the island's roundabouts have a rich story to tell and represent the first landmark of many com-munities that tourists or other visitors see.
