THE EDITOR, Sir:
WHEN I was going to high school, my teachers always reminded us that those of us who made it to university represented the top five per cent of society.
We were the cream; we got this privilege to attend an institution that many others would only be able to visit or pass the gate of on the way home.
Last Tuesday night I came to the opinion that the percentage had changed (got larger) or that the poison that has infected our society has now reached the brain.
The young man who articulately expressed his opinion on the TVJ news report showed that what we once expected from the bottom, no longer resides only at the bottom.
I was on campus earlier in the evening and saw the crowd. I was told that a homosexual had been beaten. I was disappointed that on campus, such a thing would take place, but I did not know the details.
On the news report more information came out. It appears that a breakdown took place, as this person had been allegedly escorted off campus twice for unknown activities in the bathroom.
There must have been some way to detain him for a psychological examination, or to protect the students on campus. So because of that, the alleged perpetrator ended up in a situation where someone felt threatened. But the actions of the students showed no thought, no foresight, only mob justice.
Our society has big problems. If this were a tree we would have been told that it should be chopped down because the rot has gone all the way through.
The alleged perpetrator should have been removed permanently the second time at least. The students reading for degrees in various disciplines had the opportunity to show where our society is going and did: right down the drain. Is this the opportunity to begin a new direction or to now just carry out the flush action?
I am, etc.,
