Portia's lack of reality
published: Tuesday | April 11, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE COMMENTS by PM Portia Simpson Miller that she was appointed by God is not only sad but is an indication of her lack of reality. God did not appoint her, the delegates of her party did. PM Simpson Miller has made her first serious blunder. She said she would be instructing her ministers to appoint a pastor to every public sector board, either as chairman or member, to ensure probity.

Having a religious person on every public sector board is not necessarily going to ensure probity and visibility. It will do nothing for the veracity of the public sector. The inclusion of a religious minister on every board will not generate any meaningful change. The way we conduct our politics is a subculture and requires a paradigm shift for any meaningful change to be made.

Secondly PM Simpson Miller should have been advised that she really does not need to grandstand on a religious platform to connect with the masses. She needs to get down to the task at hand, running a country, making these impromptu church service visits is doing nothing for her image.

It takes much more to run a country than asking for the support of Christians. Having a religious grounding is good, but it will not necessary be an effective political strategy or for that matter international policies.

PM Simpson Miller will be better served trying to wrap her mind around the newly formed CARICOM Single Market and the issue of crime. The right people must be placed in the right position to effect the changes needed for us to move forward.

I am, etc.,
