Christopher Brown changes mind about St Mary constituency
published: Thursday | April 13, 2006

THE PEOPLE'S National Party's (PNP) constituency caretaker for South East St. Mary, Christopher Brown, has indicated that he is no longer interested in succeeding Harry Douglas as Member of Parliament for the area.

It had been widely rumoured earlier this week that Mr. Douglas, who had indicated last year that he would step down as MP ahead of the next general election, was contemplating a possible continuation as the PNP's representative in the constituency.

Supporters of Mr. Brown this week demonstrated in the constituency, complaining that they wanted Mr. Brown to be their candidate whenever the next election is called.

DECIDED AGAINST CONTESTING

However, Maureen Webber, PNP deputy general secretary, told The Gleaner/Power106 News yesterday that Mr. Brown has indicated that he has decided against contesting the parliamentary seat.

Ms. Webber said the reports that Mr. Douglas had changed his mind about retirement may have prompted the current constituency caretaker's decision.
