ST. JOHN'S, Antigua CMC:
JAMAICA USED a good all-round performance and toppled defending champions Trinidad and Tobago in the second round of the 2006 CLICO West Indies Under-15 cricket tournament yesterday afternoon.
Two-time champions Jamaica repelled a determined bowling effort and outgunned the favourites for a two-wicket victory, while Barbados and Guyana rebounded from first-day losses to register their first wins of the tournament.
At Liberta, Trinidad and Tobago, bidding for a record fifth title, struggled against tight Jamaican bowling and could only post 144 for nine off their 50 overs.
Captain Yannick Carriah, one of six players retained from the team that won last year's championship in Trinidad with an unblemished 5-0 record, scored 49 and Aaron Alfred supported with 21, while Garth Garvey led Jamaica's bowling with two for 14. Jamaica, champions in 1996 and 2003, won with more than six overs to spare but lost eight wickets in achieving the victory.
They finished on 145 for eight off 43.4 overs with Kennar Lewis (29) and Andre Creary (26) getting most runs against Yannick Ottley (3-24) and Javed Boodram (2-26).
At All Saints: Barbados, who were beaten by Guyana on Tuesday, easily defeated the Leeward Islands by 69 runs.
Jamal Phillips (54), Ronaldo Brathwaite (48), Dario Cummings (44), and Daley Granger (40) scored heavily against Tishaun Josiah (2-26) and Kelbert Walters (2-51) in the Barbados score of 255 for eight off 50 overs.
The Leewards replied with 86 all out in 41.4 overs with Diewan Phillip (40) and Cleyton Payne (32) leading the scorers, while Dario Sargeant (4-34) and Johnson Husbands (3-20) shared seven wickets.
The Windwards registered a clear win over Guyana at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) when they posted 174 for eight off 50 overs and restricted Guyana to 121 all out off 42.1 overs in reply.
Today is a rest day and the tournament resumes tomorrow.
