THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE PALISADOES Road is once again in the news with an offer of technical assistance from our Cuban brethren. As is expected from the Cubans, the offer is "free". In addition to improving the coastal defences, the plan is to make the strip a recreational attraction.
I am hoping to hear from our Jamaican engineers on this proposal because, if memory serves me right, they too had a plan to restructure this important road.
The Cubans are skilled in mass removal of their population when faced with pending disaster. Hence they suffer very little in terms of loss of life. But how good are they at making this roadway less prone to water damage, erosion and the recommendation from our own engineers, at elevating the entire strip?
We Jamaicans are grateful to the Cubans for their expertise in other areas, but we should also show confidence and credibility in our own engineers to do their best for our country. The project will cost a lot of money and the Jamaican Government should stand by it.
I am, etc.,
