Glenroy Sinclair, Staff ReporterTHE JAMAICA Constabulary Force (JCF) is in the process of transferring more than 350,000 criminal records, and samples of fingerprints found at crime scenes, onto the newly-installed Automated Palm Information System (APIS), fingerprinting machine.
According to information reaching The Gleaner, a team from France is currently in the island completing the installation of the system at the Police Computer Centre, on the compound of the Commissioner's Old Hope Road office.
THREE CENTRES
Speaking with The Gleaner yesterday, a spokesperson at the computer centre disclosed that there will be three centres; one at the Criminal Records Office at the CIB Headquarters in downtown Kingston, another in Montego Bay, St. James and the third at the border of St. Ann and St. Mary.
Norris Rhoomes, operations manager at the Police Computer Centre, said persons applying for a police record will no longer be required to roll their palm and fingers in ink. Instead their prints will be scanned by the machine which will deliver the results more quickly.
The Gleaner has also learnt that the police have acquired portable machines that can scan the prints of suspects apprehended on operations. The portable machines can store up to 100,000 prints.
