THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WOULD like to extend best wishes to the Honourable Portia Simpson Miller who, against all odds, has become the seventh and first female Prime Minister of Jamaica.
I am a bit perturbed, however, at the statement made by her at a church service where she mentioned that she has been appointed by the almighty God to be Prime Minister, and implored Christians to give support to the appointment of the Lord, because if it is not done the whip will not be drawn against her.
While I will not question the sincerity of the Prime Minister's Christianity, forgive me if I am a bit sceptical, the fact that I was not aware of her spirituality until it became close to the time of her becoming president of the PNP and subsequently Prime Minister. This leads to the question whether it is just a matter of expediency/tact to appease the Jamaican people.
You see 'Mama', 'Sista P', your sons, daughters, brothers and sisters are all looking to you for quality leadership. The expectations are high and because of your popularity and caring attitude, we are prepared to work and support you in every way possible.
Let me advise, however, that some of us are very 'fickle' and should we get hungry and you cannot provide us with food to put in our bellies, your excuse of not getting support from 'wi daddy' will not wash.
So Madam Prime Minister, while we commend you to keep God as the centre of your being, I would implore you to get on with the business of governance, because history will be very unkind to you if you do not deliver.
I am, etc.,
