THE DOVER raceway came alive on Easter Monday, but on this occasion the roar of finally-tuned performance cars was substituted for the flitter of bicycle wheels as the Cutters Cycling Club of Kingston hosted one of what is expected to be four meets this year.
The inaugural event saw cyclists from all across the island converge to do battle in their respective categories. Michael Daley of Montego Bay Cycling Club and Marlo Rodman of Cutters CC came out in first and second positions respectively in the first run juniors section.
The National Supply Classic (categories 3 and 4) was next up and it saw O'Neil Sinclair from May Pen CC take top honours. Next was the Mother's Power Patty-Power Race (categories 1 and 2). This field saw a number of seasoned riders take part including national champions O'Neil Samuels and Tinga Turner, both of whom represented the nation at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
Samuels topped the category while Turner was second. Samuels then went on to take the final event, the Suzuki Grande Finale, ahead of Raydean Lawson and Dean Martin. The Grande Finale was the most spectacular race of the day. The 'Devil Takes The Hind Most' saw a full field of cyclists attacking each other on every lap of the hilly circuit. Fans were in awe as the format calls for the last man across the start/finish line on each lap to drop out.
The humorous announcing of the event, dubbed the 'Carnival of Speed', by veteran racing commentator Hilary Jardine fired up the crowd on a well-organised and exciting day of cycle racing.
