GUYANA: Corbin calls for crime forum
published: Friday | April 28, 2006

GEORGETOWN,

Guyana (CMC):

PARLIAMENTARY OPPOSITION Leader Robert Corbin Wednesday night called for an urgent forum among political leaders to hammer out an anti-crime programme.

Notwithstanding sharp differences among political groups here, which, historically, have divided the 730,000 multi-racial population, Corbin remained optimistic that if leaders acted together they could make some impact on the country's crime situation.

"I sincerely believe that if the leaders of this nation act together the spirit of the nation will be lifted and light will shine through the darkness.

RECONCILIATORY ENVIRONMENT

"We must sit, all of us, together in a reconciliatory environment that is driven by a common cause - the cause of the survival of this nation," the leader of the main opposition People's National Congress Reform (PNC/R) party said in an address to the nation.

Corbin's appeal was made against the backdrop of the recent quadruple execution of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, Other Crops and Livestock Minister Satyadeow 'Sash' Sawh, two of his siblings and his security guard at his Earl's Court, La Bonne Intention east coast residence last weekend.
