Kudos to Mayor McKenzie
published: Sunday | April 30, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PLEASE ALLOW me to respond to a letter from a Mr. Caswell Isaacs, advising the Mayor of Kingston to "chill out", referring to the local government's clampdown on illegal parking by the police.A police vehicle can park or drive anywhere if the situation warrants it. The line is drawn where a police vehicle is parked for extended periods in designated places like sidewalks, fire hydrants, driveways and emergency exits. This, I think, is the bone of the mayor's contention and should not be tolerated. No one is above the law and that includes those who are entrusted to enforce it.

COMMENDED

Mayor McKenzie should be commended for his effort because no other government in the history of Jamaica has ever come out against this sort of behaviour by our police department. Jamaica is not alone in this kind of behaviour by police officers, as in the city of Philadelphia where I live, it is a daily occurrence.

The irony of this though is the police are answerable to the mayor, but he is not saying or doing anything about it!!

If Mr. McKenzie needs to "chill out", then Mr. Isaacs needs to "thaw out".

I am, etc.,

LLOYD D. SCOTT
