The answer lies within
published: Monday | May 1, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE SCHOOL is a factory that creates young minds. Unfortunately, in recent times we have been seeing some very faulty products emerging from these factories. Many are asking whom do we blame for this, but the truth is the answer lies within us all.

There has to be a united effort from teachers, parents and the government to initiate a change. We have to free our minds from the colonial powers that still enslave us and cause us to be so separated in our actions. Jamaican people have to realise our worth. We have to be more positive and hold on to the slightest flicker of light that we can find, instead of losing ourselves in the thick darkness that surrounds us.

Marcus Garvey's teachings should be a way of life - "One God, one aim, one destiny." We will never be respected as a nation until we realise that this is way beyond politics. We must be able to exist as a people under one united government. Now, we are like a disorganised and filthy house that would cause an outsider to turn up his nose at our table. But, at least we have a house. What we need to do is stick with what is already ours and use our powerful minds and vibrant African spirits to cleanse and maintain it.

The time for pointing fingers has passed. We need to stop running away to another man's already developed country. Let us all look within and find what we have done wrong and how we can make things better.

I am, etc.,

OMAR EVANS
