Guns found at Kingston's port
published: Saturday | May 6, 2006

Ross Sheil, Staff Reporter

ONE MAN was taken into custody yesterday following the discovery of five illegal guns at Kingston's port yesterday.

About 12:30 p.m. yesterday, a police team moved in to seize a refrigerator that they had been keeping under surveillance. Inside were three handguns and two 9mm rifles which came with adapters enabling them to fire .22 calibre ammunition.

Also discovered were nine assorted magazines and 193 rounds of assorted ammunition. One of the rifles even came with a warranty book (still in plastic wrap) and an instruction manual.

"This, the calibre is unusual in a sense that they can be converted and can fire both types of rounds which gives them (gunmen) greater flexibility ... they can be converted to .22 and used as sniper rounds to aim at pressure points such as the neck," said Assistant Superintendent of Police Victor Barrett, who led the investigation. He was speaking at the Organised Crime Division on Orange Street, downtown Kingston.

INSTRUCTION MANUAL

ASP Barrett said the rareness of the gun, and its ability to fire both rounds, explained the presence of the instruction manual.

ASP Barrett said the operation also involved Kingfish, Customs and international counterparts. However, police would not reveal more about the discovery for fear of damaging an investigation for which they reported strong leads.
