Wizards edge closer to securing second-place spot
published: Thursday | May 11, 2006

THE DENHAM Town Wizards edged closer to locking up the KFC/bmobile National Basketball League second-place spot heading into Saturday's play-offs, following a 75-70 victory over the Harbour View Lakers at the National Stadium courts on Tuesday night.

For the Lakers, the loss was a devastating one as they must now win their final game against the Tivoli All-Stars to have any shot of remaining in basketball's top league.

With a 6-15 record and 27 points, they trail the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) (7-15) by two points. The JDF have already wrapped up their season, but should the teams end up tied on points and records, goal difference will decide the team to be relegated.

Big man Gary Reid had 23 points and 11 rebounds while Byron Dixon had a 14 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort for the Lakers.

Anthony Farquharson had 23 points and nine rebounds and Andrade Wright had 12 points and nine rebounds for the winners. The Harbour View Lakers will take on the Tivoli All-Stars in tonight's 8:00 p.m. encounter at the National Stadium courts.

In Tuesday night's other game, the Arnett Gardens Rockers all but locked up fourth place when they blew away the Link Up-All Stars 87-61.

The Rockers now have an 11-10 record and 32 points while the Link-Up All Stars occupy fifth at 10-12, also on 32 points. Ian Gooden had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Rockers while Devon Campbell had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Link-Up.
