Waterhouse basks in premier league glory
published: Monday | May 15, 2006

LAMEY

UNDER A haze of blue yellow and white, Kevin Lamey was crowned king of Waterhouse football when he copped the club's Footballer of the Year award at their awards presentation ceremony held at the Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston on Friday night.

After a season where Waterhouse won the Wray and Nephew National Premier League, the team affectionately called 'Firehouse', lauded its players and administration for sticking to the task.

The guest speaker of the night, Finance Minister Dr. Omar Davies, was on hand to remind the club that they should make sure that they continue the business of creating good citizens.

"Not everybody can be a professional footballer at the highest level, but everybody can be a good citizen," he pointed out.

During the awards presenta-tion, Keion Clunis, formerly of Star Cosmos, was awarded the team's most disciplined player, while Vincent Earle, ahead of a senior national call-up, was voted the team's most improved player.

The best defensive player of the year at Waterhouse went to former national and Tivoli Gardens centre half Marco McDonald, while Jomo Gordon and Demar Phillips shared the title for the most outstanding offensive player.

Lamey was also given the leading goalscorer accolade, as his 22 goals for the season also led the league.

There were also outstanding young player awards as Dean Phillips copped the Under-13, Kenrick Reeves the Under-15, Ramone Palmer the Under-17 and Mark Newsome the Under-20 titles for the most outstanding junior players.

The most outstanding female player award went to national representative Omolyn Davis, who was present after helping Jamaica thrash St. Kitts and Nevis 11-0 in the final first round game of the Caribbean zone CONCACAF qualifying tournament at the Arnett Gardens Sports Complex.

The night wasn't just for the players though, and the administration also had their share of pride in helping Waterhouse to a second Premier League title.

"Every time that you try to give Waterhouse a break it draws you back. That's the kind of spirit, that's the kind of support that has allowed Waterhouse to put together another winning season," said Waterhouse FC chairman Ryan Peralto, voicing the sentiments within his executive.

"So I must say that we are all very proud that Waterhouse have taken the Wray and Nephew National Premier League this year," he added.

In an emotional moment, club president Peter Hibbert took the time to point out that the victory was also an important one for heroes that weren't able to attend.

"This victory started with a man a year ago and it showed the signs earlier in the season, and this is a victory for Peter Cargill," said Hibbert, referring to the coach that started their rebirth but died tragically in a car accident before he could see it to fruition.
