THE EDITOR, Sir:
During the month of May, we celebrate our teachers, our nurses and our mothers.
Because we live in a period in the world where priority is given to monetary gains, we all lose sight of the most important aspect of our lives and that is remembering that we are our brothers' keepers.
Could we as citizens of this country try to turn back the pages of our history and go back in time about 25 years, where each community had heroes and the headmaster, the doctor, the parson, the nurse, the district constable and all these people looked after our children and the older folks in the community?
We need to talk seriously with parents about paying attention to their children and above all to set examples.
Most of the youngsters who are now committing those horrible atrocities do not really know right from wrong as no one has pointed them in the right direction.
It is, therefore, the job of all of us, if we wish to remain safe in our beds and houses, to ensure that we reach the parents, educating them on the right way to live and they can pass on this message to their children.
This is a duty that we dare not shirk, as the longer we keep away from starting this job is the greater our peril.
So it is imperative that we use this month as the starting point to take back our country and save the youth of today and the generations to come.
We thank all mothers for nurturing us and instilling in us love of ourselves, our fellow man and our God.
I am, etc.,
