'Beating' victim shot
published: Wednesday | May 17, 2006

FOR THE second time in less than a week, 35-year-old Leroy Berry is down on his luck.

Four days after he and his wife were allegedly assaulted by the police in Half-Way Tree, St. Andrew, Mr. Berry was shot and injured by gunmen whose bullets also punched several holes in his Toyota Corolla motor car.

The incident took place in Ferry district, St. Catherine, where Mr. Berry had gone to drop off a passenger.

Allegations are that while driving through the community, he got involved in a heated argument with a group of men who were blocking the roadway.

According to the police, on his way out, a man fired several shots, one of which struck Mr. Berry in the side. Contacted yesterday, Mr. Berry declined to comment on the incident.

Last Wednesday, Mr. Berry, his wife, Margaret, and members of the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF) were involved in a confrontation after the police stopped his car.

The lawmen's alleged beating of Mrs. Berry prompted Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller to request a full report on the incident. An ISCF cop has since been removed from front-line duties.
