Jamaicans too passive
published: Wednesday | May 17, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

OVER THE years, Jamaicans have allowed things to go by the wayside, and when it gets worse then we complain, by which time it's too late. The first time the Government said they were going to use funds from the NHT the contributors (the workers of this country, some of whom will never get a benefit) should have come out in their numbers and opposed it. Let's face it, now the precedent has been set, the NIS is next.

We work all our lives so that we can have a benefit when we reach a senior age, or when those medical bills arrive in the senior years, not to help small businesses. Well, if they are going to be just using funds for purposes other than what they were intented for, why not go into the NIR? Oh yes! I bet they did not see that as an option.

In any institution, if there is a surplus, then it should be passed on to the shareholders or, in this case, the contributors.

I am etc.,
