THE NATIONAL Works Agency (NWA), will today begin the de-silting of the Bull Park and Chalky Rivers in St. Thomas.
The work will be carried out in collaboration with stakeholders in the area as part of the NWA's flood mitigation efforts to keep waterways open, protect structures and reduce damage during heavy rainfall.
In a statement yesterday, the NWA said it also intends to begin de-silting of the Negro River in the Danvers Pen Community. Some 500 feet of bunding is also being carried out as a continuation of the $15 million project, started last year when the roadway between Trinityville and Serge Island was made passable.
Stephen Shaw, manager of communication and customer services at the NWA, said last year the agency undertook approximately 700 feet of protective works in this area following heavy rains that left the roadway impassable.
Mr. Shaw said de-silting work will also take place along the channel of the Morant and Johnson Rivers between Lower York and Cottage Pen. The NWA is also carrying out gabion protective works to the western pier and abutment of the Bustamante Bridge at a cost of under past just $12 million.
