SPANISH TOWN:

CISLYN POWELL, the mother of world 100-metre record holder Asafa, was crowned Mother of the Year 2006 at a function held in St. Catherine on Sunday night.

It was a perfect Mother's Day gift for the 55-year-old, who is also the pastor of the Redemption National Church of God in Linstead.

The Gleaner visited the Pleasant Farm Club to find a host of well wishers, family and friends, headed by Custos of St. Catherine, Sophia Azan, for the occasion called: Mother's Day, Evening of Elegance Part 2, with the theme: Mother Strong Invincible The Strength of a Woman.

When the pastor was announced the winner, she walked up to the podium nervously and was given her plaque, bouquet and also a trophy from her church while being serenaded by a police trio.

She was soon flanked by her husband, William, and sons Asafa and Noel.

She later told The Gleaner that she was nervous.

"It was on Thursday that one of my sons told me that they would be taking me to a dinner and I did not know that anything like this would have happened until the announcement was made," she said.

CELEBRATORY MOOD

Asafa was also in a celebratory mood. "I feel good that my mother has been given the crown. I think she deserved it as she has continued to instill great values on us and that is what I use to go through in life," he said.

In parting, he said: "I will be lowering the world record, come next month ... I am confident that this will be done".

The evening was sponsored by several companies including Zion Roots, Windalco, Jamaica National Building Society, Brenda's Flower Shop, SuperClub Breezes Runaway Bay, Singer, Clean Right Chemical, Heavenly Concept and a host of other companies.
