Doctor's rape case continues
published: Monday | May 22, 2006

THE CROWN closed its case in the rape and indecent assault case against Dr. Matt Myrie Friday in the Home Circuit Court.

The 32-year-old gynaecologist is accused of raping the complainant on February 26, last year while she was a patient at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital.

Sixteen witnesses have testified for the Crown at the trial which began on May 8.

Defence lawyers Bert Samuels and Jacqueline Samuels Brown have made an application for the complainant to be recalled for further cross-examination when the trial resumes on Wednesday.

The Crown represented by Dirk Harrison, Crown Counsel, is alleging that the offences were committed in the ultra sound room at the hospital where Dr. Myrie was attached. Dr. Myrie is on bail in the sum of $500,000 with surety.

Mrs. Justice Marva McIntosh is presiding at the trial.

Lilly Claire Belay, legal officer at the Ministry of Health is watching proceedings on behalf of the Ministry.
