Treat civil servants fairly
published: Tuesday | May 23, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS ANOTHER Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is about to be signed, I wonder how much more sacrifices the Government will be asking the people to make. Once again, there will be restrictions in the amount of money that will be taken home by the public sector workers of this country. I am sure that the increase will even reflect the rate of inflation in the past two years.

It seems rather unfair that with all the overruns in projects and the mismanagement of funds that it is the people who should have to suffer. Just before the first MoU came into effect, the ministers all got a wage increase. This increase was in no way near the three per cent offered in the MoU. Why is it that the ministers got so much more than the public sector workers? Is this right when they have failed so miserably at their jobs ?

The other thing that is funny about this is that we did not hear the Opposition members contesting this increase in their salaries yet during the recent budget debate there was concern over the new wage bill. Wasn't there concern about the wage bill when they were receiving their increases? The public sector workers do deserve fairness from both sides of the House.

I am, etc.,

KEVAN SMITH
