Negril keen to maintain lead
published: Wednesday | May 24, 2006

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

NEGRIL FC will try to maintain their lead atop the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) National Premier League play-off table when they host Naggo Head at Frome today.

In the day's other encounter, St. Georges travel to August Town as the third round of games continues.

From two games, Negril, on four points, lead August Town by one with St. Georges on two and Naggo Head bringing up the rear with one.

In a clash of the top and bottom teams, Negril FC out of Westmoreland could take a stranglehold of the play-offs with another home win over the struggling Naggo Head.

The Jerome Waite-coached team edged August Town and earned an away point against St. Georges with a 90th minute equaliser in their 1-1 draw.

Based on the run of play so far, the luck seems to be in Negril's favour after being dominated by August Town and eking out a win last week, then their last-minute equaliser against St. Georges on Sunday.

Howard Phillips, Dwight Gordon, Lamart McIntosh, Andre Barrett and Kevon Grant will be the key players as Negril FC hunt another win.

NAGGO HEAD AT BOTTOM

Naggo Head from St. Catherine are at the bottom and will want to change that in a hurry today. The Harold Thomas-coached team could pull off the upset and get back on track.

The talented Patrick Edmondson will again lead the Naggo Head charge from in front and should be ably supported by Carlos Barrett, Kenardo Forbes and Fabian Sines.

Over at the UWI field, August Town could once again utilise their home advantage and secure their second consecutive win.

The Christopher Bender-coached team will be playing its second of three consecutive home games and could put itself in a strong position for promotion if it gains maximum points.

August Town are a physical team with David Laylor, Delroy Johnson, Tafari O'Connor, Nicholas Smith, Kevin Blair and Eltham High schoolboy Tremaine Stewart up front, could rattle their opponents.

But the Portland-based St. Georges won't be pushovers and could maintain their unbeaten record, although they are yet to secure a win.

If Damion Harwood, Marlon Dyer, Delroy Boyd and Dwight Holmes turn up in a fighting mood, then we could have a serious match on our hands.
