June 30 is Caribbean Day
published: Saturday | May 27, 2006

BREAK OUT the flying fish and breadfruit, Caribbean Day is just around the corner!

Yes, on June 30, the region will be united in celebration of a day intended to promote Caribbean unity.

Different groups and individuals in the Caribbean and across the world are independently organising events to mark the day.

According to Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, one of the organisers of Caribbean Day celebrations in Trinidad, the primary aim of observing such an occasion, is to promote unity in the region. Another goal is to get the Caribbean diaspora residing worldwide to unite.

"We have manifold differences but one common bond, our Caribbean heritage. It is unchangeable and we must be proud to be West Indians. Our public and religious festivals and celebrations are unique and our nationals have earned the respect and admiration of millions around the world," Dr. Teelucksingh said.
