Molynes shooting for the double
published: Saturday | May 27, 2006

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

MOLYNES UNITED 'A' and Ravens 'A' have an opportunity to etch their name in netball's history books for being the first team to win the Supreme Ventures Division 'A' title, with the final set for the Leila Robinson Courts this evening at three o'clock.

In its first year, the competition has created much excitement and Molynes and Ravens, two relatively new netball clubs, have fought hard to be in contention with a chance to grab a title.

The Supreme Ventures Division 'C' title is also on the line, with Molynes United 'B' and Speg 'B' vying for top honours.

While Molynes 'A' made their way to the final against Ravens quite easily, after beating Alexander Strikers 35-29 to get to the final, their opponents were also comfortable after romping to a 32-26 victory over Ebony Strikers 'A'.

PLAYERS' TALENT

With the teams looking at ease until this point, the difference might come down to the talent of the players themselves. Corelette McDonald is a dangerous shooter for Ravens, as her semi-final play, which saw her shooting 31 goals from 37 attempts, showed in no uncertain terms.

Molynes United have been known to be good offensively but they also have a tendency to outscore their opponents. Doing that against a shooter of the calibre of McDonald might be very dangerous and could cost them.

On the other hand, Ravens, who have shown immense potential over the last two years, also have a tendency to make mistakes in trying to get the ball to their tall shooter too quickly, thus turn-overs are likely and could be harmful.

If they can avoid those pitfalls, they will walk away with $70,000.

LOSER'S PRIZE

The loser of the game will not come away empty-handed though, with a $50,000 prize for second place.

In Division 'C', Molynes United 'B' will have to deal with a team that has vast experience in Speg 'B', and while Molynes are a team on the rise and have been doing many things right, as is evident from having a team in two finals, they are very inexperienced at this stage and this could very well have an impact on the outcome.

Despite that, the final of both competitions is expected to be very close.

The winner of the Division 'C' title will earn $40,000, while second place will walk away with $30,000.

On Wednesday, Ebony Strikers copped third place in the Division 'A' play-offs after beating Alexander Strikers 29-21. For their effort they have earned $35,000, while Alexander Strikers are $25,000 richer.

In Division 'C', Friendship earned an overtime 29-20 victory over Police 'C' after regulation play had ended at 20-all. Friendship added $20,000 to their coffers for the win, while their opponents copped $15,000.
