Ready or not, the hurricane season is here and it is here to stay - for six months, that is.
Today marks the beginning of the Atlantic Hurricane Season which forecasters are anticipating will be another active and drama-packed episode.
Initial predictions by the experts are that 13 to 16 tropical storms will develop during the season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.
Evan Thompson, head of the weather branch at the National Meteorological Service, told The Gleaner that a season with more than 10 predicted storms is classified as an active season.
The initial projection for last year's Atlantic hurricane season, which recorded an unprecedented 27 tropical storms that exhausted the English alphabet, was 12 to 15 tropical storms.
Despite recording a higher initial prediction than its predecessor, Mr. Thompson said the 2006 season is not expected to eclipse the 2005 season.
"The numbers don't indicate a definite hit...there is no way of pinpointing landfall at this point," he explained.
