Victory puts Negril back in the hunt
published: Thursday | June 1, 2006

NEGRIL FC roared back into contention in the 2006-07 Wray & Nephew National Premier League (NPL) play-off when a first half strike by Andre Walker gave them a 1-0 win over St. George's United at Frome Sports Ground in Westmoreland.

With August Town getting the one point they needed to qualify in their 0-0 draw against Naggo Head, which lifted them to an unassailable 10 points, Negril, which moved up to seven points with their win, are now left to battle out the final place with Naggo Head, third on six points.

"We came into the game knowing that we had to win and despite having a number of injuries in our camp we gave it our all," said Junior Francis, manager of the Negril team. "We will now have to sit down and plan seriously for our final game against Naggo Head because we cannot afford to lose that game."

COUNTER-ATTACK

With Negril struggling to keep St. George's at bay, they took the lead in the 18th minute when Kevon Grant broke free on a counter-attack and crossed perfectly to Walker.

His side-footed volley struck the hands of the diving goalkeeper, but still found its way into the back of the net, making the half-time score 1-0.

Down into second-half play, Negril gradually took charge, peppering the St. George's defence with a series of well-coordinated raids.

However, despite clear-cut chances to Walker and Kenneth Ferguson, they failed to widen their slender lead.
