Conscience call
published: Monday | June 5, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I NOTE that our Minister of Justice and Attorney General is quoted as saying that "the problem of human trafficking is real and that it should shock our consciences." While I agree with his statement, what concerns me even more as a citizen of this county is the fact that the judicial system over which he presides as minister has reached a point where few Jamaicans have faith in its ability to deliver justice in an efficient and timely manner.

The loss of confidence has reached a point where vigilante justice and appeals to so called area leaders or 'dons' are the people's preferred route to obtain some semblance of justice.

He presides over the office of the Director of Public Prosecution from which cases to go to court, improperly prepared and which are thrown out by presiding judges thereby frustrating the efforts to bring law-breakers to justice.

Are these not the issues which are "real" and should shock his "conscience." ?

I am, etc.,
