TELEVISION JAMAICA Limited yesterday announced that on Saturday morning it will launch a second channel. TVJ Sports Network (TVJ-SN) will take to the airways at midnight.
In what the company says is a "soft launch", and with plans of rapid growth, TVJ Sport Network is targeting being a dominant channel for local and regional sporting events on subscriber cable television.
TESTING PHASE
The channel will use the next few months as a testing phase and it has confirmed or is in negotiations with over a dozen cable operations.
The service can be accessed initially in six parishes: Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Manchester, St. James and St. Ann.
Project manager for channel development and director of operations for the RJR Communications Group, Gary Allen, said that the channel will kick off with delayed World Cup football coverage (while live coverage will be exclusive on TVJ), West Indies versus India cricket coverage (exclusive on TVJ-SN when World Cup Football is on) and the inaugural Stanford 20/20 regional cricket tournament (exclusive live coverage on TVJ-SN).
The channels confirmed are: In Kingston and St. Andrew, Entertainment Systems and Omni - Channel 90, Sauce, D&L, Starcom and Allied Cable - Channel 5, Telstar - Channel 107; in St. Catherine: Jacks Cable - Channel 42, Oliver's Electronic and Starcom - Channel 5; In Manchester - Wilson's Cable - Channel 109; In St. James - Cornwall Communications - Channel 68; In St. Ann - North Eastern Cable - Channel 57.
