Foods that keep you 'full' for longer

THERE IS more hunger during the rainy season. This is a belief held by many Jamaicans. To keep your tummies full for a longer period, here is Food's list of 'Belly Full Meals.'

"These foods usually have a higher fat content than other foods.

They stay in the stomach longer giving a feeling of fullness," said Angela Grandison of Grace Kitchens.

EXAMPLES OF THESE FOODS ARE:

Cheese (cheesy yam, casserole, macaroni cheese, cheese omelette)

Potato salad

Hurricane stew

'Tun' cornmeal with red peas stew

Bacon bean and potato medley

Curry

Soups, stews

Rice and pasta (when heated has an increase in volume. It stretches, is very economical and easy to prepare).

Recipe

Curried rice and franks one pot

Preparation time: eight minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes Serves four to six

INGREDIENTS

1 cup Grace frankfurters
1/4 cup onion

1 medium sweet pepper

1 clove garlic

2 medium carrots

11/4 cups Grace green peas

3 tbsps. Grace vegetable oil

3 tbsps. curry powder

4 cups water

1 packet Grace chicken noodle soup

2 cups Grace rice

METHOD

1. Cut Grace frankfurters in rounds, chop onion, sweet pepper and garlic. Slice carrots and drain Grace green peas.

2. Heat Grace vegetable oil in pot, sand sauté onion, sweet pepper, garlic and curry powder.

3. Pour on water and the entire contents of the Grace chicken noodle soup mix.

4. Add Grace rice, stir and cover.

5. Cook until water evaporates, then stir in all remaining ingredients. Steam until rice grains are tender.
