Food addict: A nutty affair
published: Thursday | June 15, 2006

Nashauna Drummond just loves peanut brittle and must have a constant supply handy at all times. - NORMAN GRINDLEY/DEPUTY CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER

IT IS very hard yet so sweet. There is something very relaxing and soothing about that combination in my mouth which might be why I'm addicted to peanut brittle.

The combination of the hard nuts with the sugar and cream of tartar is very relaxing. I munch it at my desk at work, at home while watching television or even during a church service.

Why I love it so much, I really don't know. Then again, addiction is usually not easy to explain. I'm not sure how it started, I just had a craving one night, I bit into a peanut brittle, felt satisfied and then I wanted more and more.

CHILDHOOD OBSESSION

Maybe it's a childhood obsession coming back to haunt me. I'm not addicted to peanuts. Peanut cakes are OK and so is peanut butter if it's the chunky kind. But there is just something about that combination that keeps me opening bar.

If I tried to explain it, I could guess that it's the actual 'brittle' that really has me. Right now the roof of my mouth is slightly sore from a cut caused by biting on the hard nuts and caramelised sugar.

But it's all so good. A good source of protein which repairs and maintains my body. It's cholesterol-free, none of that bad stuff for me. Dietary fibres and vitamins and minerals.

After all, if you're going get hooked, it may as well be on something healthy. There are some foods you just can't get enough of.

PS: So serious is Nashauna's addiction to peanut brittle, she bought enough to last while she vacations abroad for the next two weeks.
