Grace net easy win in Business House Open League
published: Thursday | June 15, 2006

Carolyn Johnson, Gleaner Writer

GRACE DEFEATED Lascelles 15-4 in an unimpressive match of the Business House Open League netball competition in one of seven matches at the Leila Robinson courts on Tuesday.

Eight games were scheduled but Elite failed to show for their match against Wisynco.

Though both teams played poorly, Grace managed to get by Lascelles with a better defence. They took some time to build their momentum and at the start they failed to make goals and weren't catching cleanly, but they soon recovered and played a winning game.

The goalkeeper was quick to grab rebounds and send the ball down court.

Defence was Lascelles' weak point, with the exception of GK Rowena Anderson. The team's error showed as they failed to mark their opponents and didn't grab enough rebounds.

While Grace's shooters did well, they were lazy, not aggressively pursuing the ball. Still, they earned their space on the team by sinking the majority of balls that entered the circle.

Coach Sharon Hill agreed that although her team had won, they played poorlyh.

LOOKED BAD

"I don't think my team played to the best of their ability. In the first half they never looked so bad, (in) the second half they petered away. We have a lot of things to work on, [and] the season is still young. We have to go back to the drawing board and work on some of these (flaws) I saw today. I think our defence wasn't bad, the defence played well and did their job. Overall our team didn't play well," Hill told The Gleaner.

Meanwhile, Lascelles coach Bethune Morgan did not have much to say.

"My team didn't come to play today. We made too many basic mistakes. We lost an easy game," Morgan said.

In other matches, scores were: STATIN 10 HEART 13, Port Authority 12 Cable and Wireless 'B' 1, Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) 11 GSP 17, Courts 31 Aerotel 10, Maritime 25 National Water Commission 'A' 3, NEM 12 Kraft 20.

The competition continues at the Leila Robinson courts today at 5:45 with defending champions General Accident taking on CBC, Digicel facing Bank of Nova Scotia 'B', Lasco vs Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB), Blue Cross taking on FCIB, Life of Jamaica (LoJ) tackling Jamaica Defence Force, Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) challenging National Water Commission 'B', National Water Commission 'A' vs Bank of Nova Scotia 'A' and COOL shooting against JIO.
