OPPOSITION MEMBER of Parliament for Eastern Hanover, Barrington Gray, has called for better roads, potable water and better-equipped schools for his constituents.
Mr. Gray, who was the sole speaker in the Sectoral Debate, which resumed on Tuesday in Gordon House, said the Government had neglected his constituency over the years.
He said Transport and Works Minister, Robert Pickersgill, had promised that he would have repaired roads such as Cascade via Patty Hill to Flower Hill, New Miles to Copse and Hopewell via Miles Town to Haughton Grove in the parish.
"Mr. Speaker, this Government knows how to motivate people at election times by offering all kinds of gifts and sweet talks and promises, and they vote and then you leave them to the mercy of God for the rest of the years," he criticised.
Turning to potable water, he said communities such as Rejoin, Woodsville, Cold Spring, Great Valley, Success, Patty Hill and Jericho, among others were currently without water.
"Last year I recommended a solution to assist with the alleviation of water shortages during the drought periods in areas where catchments and storage tanks are. The ... minister has not taken up the recommendation, and so during the drought period the people continue to suffer," he said.
POTABLE WATER
"You can still see children and parents carrying buckets of water on their heads for miles. When will the Government put potable water in these communities?" he asked.
Mr. Gray also complained about overcrowding at the Chester Castle All-Age School, which he said was built for 250 students but now has a population of 490 students.
"This has caused and continues to cause great hardship on students and teachers alike. At Mt. Ward the same problem of overcrowding is being experienced."
