Give respect
published: Monday | June 19, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN RESPONSE to the article - 'Diaspora Conference - Biggest Business' with reference to Jamaicans living abroad contributing early to Jamaica, let's start by giving some respect to us when we travel to Jamaica.

Each year, I plan my family's and friends' vacation visiting various parts of Jamaica. We spend over US$10,000 yearly on these vacations.

Last year, 23 of us came, some white. The Jamaicans were treated like dogs. The customs officer told me I was coming to Jamaica to sell, because both myself and my daughter had too much clothing. We were harrassed by customs.

Finally, I told her that I am an accountant. That shut her up. So if were are to contribute to Jamaica, start by giving us some respect.

I am, etc.,
