International University of the Caribbean opens new campus
published: Friday | June 23, 2006

Lisia Lynch, Gleaner Writer

PORT MARIA, St. Mary:

THE INTERNATIONAL Uni-versity of the Caribbean has extended its reach to eastern Jamaica with the opening of the brand new Everoy Chin campus at Whitehall Estate in St. Mary, on Wednesday.

The function attracted several dignitaries, including the Chancellor of the University, Sir Howard Cooke, moderator of University College of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, the Rt. Rev. Roderick Hewitt, and president of the Jamaica Union of Churches, Rev. Dr. Maitland Evans.

While the campus is being constructed on a section of this substantial property, classes will be held at the estate house. "For the present, on the basis of the generosity of our benefactor, Mr. Everoy Chin, we will launch the interim campus from the beautiful Whitehall Great House complex," said the Rev. Dr. Maitland Evans.

According to Dr. Evans, the university, a church-based institution, has a sense of mission to influence the formation of quality leaders who will be critically aware, spiritually and culturally sensitive and committed to life-long learning.
